Jays Aren't Interested In Mulder

May 10, 2014 11:05 PM

The Blue Jays say that any moves made in the coming weeks will be done internally. Toronto isn't even bothering to send a scout to Arizona to view a workout conducted by free-agent pitcher Mark Mulder. They'd much rather have injured pitchers Ricky Romero and Casey Janssen back. "Sooner or later, I'd like to get those guys back," manager Cito Gaston said.

Doug Melvin and the Brewers will stay in-house to replace Rickie Weeks. Melvin said he heard from the agent of unemployed Ray Durham, who played the second half of the season with the Brewers last year after being acquired from San Francisco. Melvin said he had no plans to pursue Durham. "I talked to his agent," Melvin said. "He said Ray is working out but that's the problem with these guys who are working out. It would take them awhile to get ready. "I told him we're going to go in-house for now."

Despite Strong Start, Damon Doesn't Expect To Be Back

Sep 17, 2014 6:47 PM

Johnny Damon has been hitting very well this season, but he still doesn't expect the Yankees to bring him back next year. The outfielder is in the last year of his contract, and was named the American League Player of the Week recently. "I don't think it will be too much of a surprise if they don't bring me back," Damon said. "I would love to be able to say I'll be back. This would definitely be the best place for me. I feel like this could be my last chance to be on a winner. I understand the free agent game, how it is. I know they have a bunch of young outfielders coming up. "I can't concern myself with that. I have to go out, play every day and pretend like it could be my last chance to get to the playoffs or make a World Series run." Damon is leading the Yankees in slugging (.621) and OPS (1.006). "Johnny has had a big, big season for us," manager Joe Girardi said. "Last year he had the shoulder issue [from running into the outfield fence] and it cost him some of his power numbers. Think about the hits he's had from the seventh inning on already in this year and he's been as big as anybody in baseball."

Molina Wants To Know Giants Plans On Him

Sep 29, 2014 11:41 PM

The Giants are in a a difficult situation with impending free agent Bengie Molina. He is one of their most reliable hitters, but he also plays the same position as Buster Posey. "I consider myself for the next two or three years a No. 1 guy," said Molina when asked about potentially sharing time with Posey. "If they're not counting on me for that, I wish and hope they could come and tell me that. I want to finish my career here, I wish they'd come and tell me that because I've earned that respect." Molina would like management to initiate a discussion about his future, even if the answer is not what he wants to hear. "I'm not afraid of going to free agency," he said. "What I've done for this organization, I've left my heart out there every night, day in and day out. All I want is, when the time comes, they come forward and tell me what their plans are."

On Tuesday, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen appeared to rule out Pedro Martinez as a possible addition to the team's starting rotation. "Pedro Martinez was mentioned in spring training, but just because a couple of his friends called me, and my job is to give [GM] Kenny [Williams] the information," Guillen said. "But that's it. No Pedro, not right now. That's Kenny's decision, but right now that's not on my mind."

Damon Knows Chances Of Return Are 'Slim'

Feb 17, 2014 7:06 PM

Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon will be a free agent at the end of the season. He would love to return to the team, but realizes that chances they'll want him back are "slim." "I know where I want to be next year," Damon told 1050 ESPN New York. "I want to be here in New York. I also know New York has a lot of young outfielders coming back. Austin Jackson is in the wings. At least, in this situation, I know my chances of coming back could be slim because of the young talent the Yankees do have." In addition to a prospect like Jackson, the Yankees have Melky Cabrera, Brett Gardner, Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher in the outfield. "I just go out and play," Damon said. "What happened before, I think, everybody in the world thought I was going to re-sign with Boston. Everyone thought I was going back. Here, people don't really know. Everyone is pretty much thinking this could be my last year here so I think that is a difference. I went out as a free agent in Boston and had a great year and I priced myself out of there market, at the time. Hopefully, I can go out and have a good year and they can see how important I am with the other players with doing the recruiting and doing whatever this team needs me to do. I've enjoyed playing here."
